Stunning Sonja | A Halfpenny London bride

Beautiful bride Sonja and her new husband tied the knot in September last year in a meadow at a Vermont country inn, with beautiful florals by Danika Johnson of Blomma Flicka. Their beautiful wedding was partly inspired by a 15th Century tapestry: The Unicorn Rests In A Garden, which hangs at The Met Cloisters Museum in New York City, where the couple live.

Sonja visited our wonderful stockist, The One Bridal in New York during her quest for the dream dress.

“I started my search looking for a dress with everything: tulle, lace, sequins, appliqué… the works. I tried on maybe two dozen other dresses at a few different shops. They all felt fine, but a little bit like a costume. And when it came to the more over-the-top dresses, I realized it felt like the dress was wearing me, not the other way around. I kept waiting for the moment where I would cry when I put the dress on, but that never happened.

Sue at The One Bridal was amazing. She was so patient and honest; really taking the role of an impartial friend who also happens to be extremely stylish. She also helped me explore a bunch of combinations to see which I really loved best. I ended up buying the Oliver Dress and the Peter Cape. I tried a few other combinations of accessories over the dress, but this was my favorite by far. I loved the fabric of the cape and how light passed through it. The drape in the back was just stunning, and the lace around the edge was exactly the floral touch I had been hunting for.

I knew almost immediately that the Oliver dress was the one for me. When I put it on I just felt really put-together:  statuesque and gorgeous. The only way to put it is that the dress celebrated my curves. It wasn’t crazy over-the-top like I thought I wanted, it was the dress that I felt like the best version of myself wearing.”

Sonja completed her look with an aquamarine and diamond necklace which belonged to her grandmother, her mother’s wedding band on her right hand, and a delicate diamond and aquamarine bracelet from her stepmother as her something borrowed.

“I wore Loeffler Randall Camellia shoes in metallic rose gold (to match my wedding band). My father-in-law let me borrow a 1954 penny (my mother’s birth year) from his coin collection to tuck inside the shoe’s pleats for good luck, and as another way to keep her close.

When it came time to change up my look for dancing, I removed the Peter Cape and my grandmother’s necklace to let the Oliver dress shine. I  added a dramatic red lip with a matte Chanel lippy, and some big crystal drop earrings from Dannijo.”

Sonja looked utterly incredible and I’m so happy she chose to wear Halfpenny London on her big day. It’s always such a joy to see brides from all over the world wear these pieces and thank you to Sue at The One in New York for being such a fabulous ambassador for the brand.

Congratulations to the happy couple! Here’s to countless blissfully happy years together.

Love,
